Hawaii Scenic Byways Process

The Hawaii Scenic Byway Program involves three steps: state nomination of the byway, applying for Hawaii Scenic Byway designation and preparing a Corridor Management Plan.

    November through January Community Outreach /Program Information disseminated
    January Corridor Management Plan training for recently designated byways
    Early February Call for State Byway nomination posted above.
    Late March Nomination Application Documents are due to HDOT
    April State Byway Advisory Committee convenes/reviews Nominations.  Makes recommendation(s) to Director. Sponsor group(s) notified of approved/not approved Nomination(s).
    May Sponsor groups are given the opportunity to respond to comments.  Designation Application Documents disseminated to Nominated Byways
    June Project Team provides training to each Byway Committee regarding Designation Application Material
    Late August Designation Application Documents are due to HDOT
    September State Byway Advisory Committee convenes/reviews Designation applications.  Makes recommendation(s) to Director.  Sponsor group(s) notified of approved/not approved Designation(s).
    October Sponsor groups are given the opportunity to respond to comments
